Individually designed glass surfaces are completely en vogue. For internal architecture, facade design and even the implementation of ambitious glass solutions in the public arena, architects, designers and awarding authorities value glass as a material. The material is multi-functional, easy to care for and extremely versatile in its design thanks to modern processing technology. Besides completely mono-colour coatings and structuring through geometric designs, photo-like motifs as a design medium have gained strongly in significance recently. Such images can be realised using digital printing technology.

A pioneering innovation in this segment comes from Glaviva GmbH, Chemnitz. The company, which was founded in autumn 2008, has developed a digital printing procedure, through which flat glass surfaces can be printed with high resolutions directly with environmentally friendly UV-light hardening inks, without the need for the application of any foils or background lacquering. According to the company, the resolution of the motifs created with this procedure considerably exceeds those of conventional ceramic printing procedures. The design being portrayed identically on the front and reverse of the glass is another advantage of the Glaviva procedure.
