Architectural Congress - Glass is Energy!
ENGINE OF INNOVATION
The discussion on the replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energy sources raises many questions for the future and is thus an engine of innovation. The economical use of energy is also a key issue for architecture and engineering. As archi-tects, whether we integrate passive energy-saving measures such as vacuum-insulated windows or aim for an active energy gain through the skilled use of glass as a sun trap in conservatories and double-skin façades – we must always strive to reduce the energy consumption of our buildings.
SUSTAINABILITY OF GLASS
As part of the increasingly deeper evaluation of energy use, it is also becoming clear that the production of the materials we build with requires a closer look. How sustainable is glass? What is the “grey energy” used in its production, how good or poor are its recycling options? Can the sophisticated use of glass even generate more energy than is required for its pro-duction?
ARCHITECTURE THAT TOUCHES
Naturally, we architects are also interested in whether the sus-tainable use of glass in building can lead to a strengthened building culture. An architectural congress at glasstec 2010 will – must! – consider this question. The sustainability of buildings is not solely the result of technical and statistical verifi cations. Along with the economics of its creation, main-tenance, and operation, the emotions which a building elicits are also indicators of its quality. Architecture that touches, that will be appreciated, will be used with pleasure and thus will be preserved for a long time, can without question be called sustainable.
