Painted glass from the craftsman

The coloured glass painted using the new process lends kitchens a very modern touch and can be easily cleaned.

A new painting process enables a craftsman to relatively easily apply coloured paints to flat glass. The areas of application for the coloured glass are diverse.

As an alternative to coloured glass design using silk-screen printing or roller coating, the Glas-Nagel company (www.glas-nagel-online.de) with head offices in Gladbeck North Rhine-Westphalia employs a process which is simple to apply and cost-saving for craftsman’s companies. The new painting system was developed in cooperation with PPG Pittsburgh Plate Glass, one of the world’s leading paint and glass manufacturers.

When used in combination with a specific base coat, the hardener developed in cooperation between Glas-Nagel and PPG, produces a permanent glass coating without the need for any additional burning-in. In contrast to the usual industrial glass coating processes, the coloured paint application using the new process is possible without expensive technology. The paint can be easily applied to float glass, one-pane safety glass, cast glass and a large number of other glazing types using a conventional paint gun or paint roller. More than 20,000 possible colour shades mean that every colour wish is catered for. The prior application of a bonding agent is not essential.

Simple installation and sealing

In order to find a reliable mounting and sealing technology for the installation of the painted glazing, which does not affect the paint application, Glas-Nagel cooperated with the adhesive and sealant materials specialists Fridolfinger Hermann Otto GmbH. The internationally-operating company conducted numerous laboratory tests and finally confirmed the good compatibility of the premium sanitary silicon Ottoseal S70 and the universal adhesive and sealant Ottocoll M500 with the new glass coating.

The adhesive enables the glass surfaces to be easily affixed to wood, PVC, bricks, tiles and many different metals. It can be easily finished and has a tension, stress-compensating effect. The silicon used for the sealing of all connecting joints is available ex warehouse in 35 colour shades. Should the colour range nevertheless not contain the colour shade required to optimally match the colour-painted glass, on request, Otto-Chemie will also mix special colours. With the professional guide entitled “Stick and seal painted glass perfectly”, the company is currently offering a free information brochure with all details for the correct finishing of the materials (Info: www.otto-chemie.de).

Diverse range of applications

The coordinated components not only ensure a high durability and permanence of the coloured glass surfaces, but also a large spectrum of design and application possibilities. As both the adhesive as well as the silicon are natural stone-compatible and water proof, the painted glass can also be used in wet applications. This opens up an extraordinarily large spectrum of applications. The painted glass can be used just as much in kitchens and pools as it can in the sanitary and catering sector.

Broad product spectrum at glasstec 2008

With the new product Glas-Nagel is responding to a trend, which has been evident for years towards the increased use of glass in interior design. The growing demand is attributable to the changing Zeitgeist (spirit of the times) and with it the new requirements of interior architects and real estate owners, especially however the new glass-finishing technologies available on the market. In addition to the classic paint-application processes, such as silk-screen printing and roller coating, digital print processes in particular are offering completely new possibilities in glass design. What the international suppliers currently have to offer in this market segment will be on presented from 21 to 25 October 2008 at glasstec in Düsseldorf.

More informations and functions

Over 20,000 colours available.

Simple installation: the universal adhesive Ottocoll M500 is simply applied to the base and the coloured glass pane then placed in the desired position. After the material has hardened, the glass is stable and permanently bonded with the base material.

All the joint connections with adjacent glass spaces or other materials can be effected using the Silicon Ottoseal S70 which is available in a large range of colours.

In the catering trade there are numerous possible applications for the new coloured glass. The bar illustrated in the picture was for example clearly optically upgraded using the glass panelling.

As an attractive and easy-care wall panelling, the coloured glass can be used in the shower and sanitary areas. Both the adhesive as well as the joint material are water proof.
