Furnace leaks at container plant

29/06/2009

A furnace has leaked at Saint-Gobain Containers’ plant in Dunkirk, Indiana in the USA, causing more than 1 million pounds of molten glass to spill out from the plant.

No injuries occurred from the incident, which reportedly resulted from a leak at the bottom of the furnace tank. More than eight fire departments were called to the scene in order to cool the molten glass as it spilled out of the tank.

The plant, which manufactures approximately 2.5 million amber glass beer bottles per day, employs some 450 people. The company has said that the extent of damage to the facility is not yet known.
