“Market maturity for new laminated glass system with Ug value of 0.3, burglar resistance P8B, bullet resistance BR7NS”

31/08/2010

“trisophon” Product innovation from isophon glas GmbH results in multi-layer glazing system with extreme impact resistance as well as a stunning Ug-value of 0.3 W/m2K

The leading producer of multi-layer glazing units in the south of Lower Saxony, Germany - isophon glas GmbH - announces market maturity of a record-breaking, patented multi-layer glazing system with extraordinary features in terms of impact resistance as well as insulation characteristics. The product which is available under the brand name “trisophon” has an Ug-value that can go as low as 0.3 W/m2K. The burglar resistance category goes up to P8B and bullet resistance class up to BR7NS (BR6NS+S and BR7NS+S are undergoing tests in the moment).

isophon glas GmbH will be exhibiting trisophon at the glasstec 2010 in Düsseldorf, Gernan from September 28. to October 1.

These stunning product properties are achieved with a revolutionary new combination technique where a polycarbonate sheet is integrated into the system as a floating panel. “The heavy laminated polycarbonate-glass systems available in the past are simply not usable due to the very different material properties. They tend to show drastic aging effects after a very short period of time.” says Torsten Bold, manager and technical director at isophon glas GmbH. Bold further: ”The floating integration of the polycarbonate in the window system has been developed precisely in order to avoid these effects”. The integration of the polycarbonate without lamination to the glass also opens up possibilities for various new applications.

The integrated polycarbonate sheet within the trisophon multi-layer glazing system prevents thermal energy dissipating to the outside, since the floating integration of the elastic polycarbonate results in the kinetic energy being absorbed not only by a single tiny point of the material. In the trisophon system, kinetic energy is absorbed by the entire polycarbonate sheet. The trisophon multi-layer glazing system underlines isophon’s unique and resolute development of innovations. “Laminated glazing systems with this combination of extreme burglar resistance (P8B) and a Ug-Value of 0.3 W/m2K were simply not available up to now”, says Bold. trisophon is not only extremely insulating and impact-resistant, it is also lightweight at 40 kg/m2 (in the P8B category with 3 layers) and thin, having a total thickness of only 36 mm. Burglar-resistant and bullet-proof glass manufactured using conventional technology can easily be twice as heavy and considerably thicker.

isophon glas GmbH is very happy to finally be able to present a product with these outstanding properties. Public building specifications often called for low Ug-values in conjunction with high burglar resistance - a combination of requirements which could hardly be fulfilled. Emergency exits with emergency opening device, for example, are required to prevent access to the building by shattering the glass from the outside. The trisophon product family therefore makes multi-layer glazing systems available which are both affordable and have a long service life, as well as complying with the requirements on the construction of public buildings. It has, for instance, already been granted an ift certificate (Institut für Fenstertechnik, i.e. German Window Technology Institute) authorizing it for use in resistance class WK3 (according to German standard DIN V EN V 1627). Further certifications for international standards are planned.

Further applications of trisophon are to be presented in the coming months. The ground-breaking properties in terms of insulation and impact resistance resulting from the floating polycarbonate panel and the unique features of the different panel materials point the way towards various markets. The mix of different materials in the trisophon product absorbs laser beams instead of reflecting them. This, in combination with the bullet resistance, opens up an entirely new usage in the sector of security technology for buildings. Knowing that the absorption of laser beams already passively prevents voice interception, isophon and a partner company are currently developing a system additionally incorporating artificial noise into the trisophon window system - this would then effectively rule out the possibility of laser-based espionage.

About isophon glas GmbH
isophon glas GmbH was founded in 1979 and is a highly specialized manufacturer of glass systems. The product range mainly consists of multi-layer glazing for windows and doors right through to edged, metal-coated or coated glass panels. ispohon products are used in building facades as well as shower cubicles in designer bathrooms. isophon glas GmbH’s speciality is the fabrication of glass with special technologies as well as insulating glass panels in unusual shapes (with exotic geometry) and non-standard or huge sizes. Their special expertise in processing exotic materials such as polycarbonate distinguishes isophon from all other manufacturers. isophon not only processes small product ranges from one single vendor - a high number of products from a number of vendors is processed at isophon. Even direct competitors of isophon glas GmbH source products from isophon when tricky pane geometries or special sizes are called for. isophon’s workforce currently numbers 70.
