International Master Fitter Competition 2012
The high point was the International Master Fitter Competition 2012.
A substantial part of the global production of glass and related products is destined for the so-called automotive after market. Automotive glass and the connected adhesives form an integral part of safety in modern cars. Correctly repairing and replacing of automotive glass has become a specialist profession.
This trend is initiated and supported by trade associations in this specialist sector, which enables companies to train their automotive glass installers to become certified specialists.
The growing importance of the market for repairing and replacing automotive glass is not just the result of the increase in numbers of vehicles and mileage. New glass products, modern repair products and methods, integration of electronics, developments in adhesive techniques, awaking on responsibility of the environment, increasing use of airbags, and the more and more international character of the market made it extra interesting for glasstec-visitors to look at automotive glass from a different perspective. Architects as well have learned before from glass applications in the automotive industry.
The specialist nature of automotive glazing became even more apparent during several “battles” of automotive glass technicians: The International Master Fitter Competition 2012 was held. During all days of the glasstec trade show, the audience saw the best participants of national competitions held in e.g. Norway, Portugal, Japan, South Africa, Australia, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Rumania, Germany, United Kingdom, United States. A panel of prestigious technicians from all participating countries judged on the quality skills to repair and to replace windshields/ windscreens and side windows. These aspects were combined with the knowledge of the automotive glass technicians on technical standards and on health and safety issues.
In order to make the Competition a fair and transparent event, the glasstec Autoglass Arena hosted a series of identical cars. Information by some leading exhibitors on automotive glass and related products made the Autoglass Arena even more attractive for glasstec visitors.
Representatives of the German automotive glass replacement and repair society gave a national dimension to The International Master Fitter Competition 2012. As an initiative of Bundesinnungsverband des Glaserhandwerks, technicians from glasstec’s home country competed as well. The winner was the German representative during the international “battle” on the last two days of the glasstec trade show, initiated as in former years by Messe Düsseldorf and International Automotive Glass Federation™.
