Edgetech Super Spacer® - Warm Edge Technology

Super Spacer® is the world’s first spacer system made from flexible structural foam with integrated drying agents. Compared to conventional aluminium spacers, the non-metallic material composite is impressive thanks to an exponentially lower thermal conductivity. The glass keeps the same temperature over the entire surface, the level of radiating cooling through the surfaces of the windows is reduced and the dew point shifts downwards, which reduces by up to 70% the formation of condensation in the border area compared with insulating glass windows without spacer. To a large extent, the flexible foam matrix of the Super Spacer® is moisture permeable. Therefore the high portion of drying agents can absorb moisture quickly. Modern spacers for thermal isolation of the edge seals of insulating glass windows are the missing link for energy efficient windows and facade systems. Passive-energy houses are unthinkable without the minimisation of heat losses using warm edges. In more and cases, spacers also abandon their marginal position and are put into focus by architects, builders and glass processors interested in sustainable and economical solutions. The type of materials used and their structure in particular must be evaluated when choosing a suitable system, because of the significant requirements in thermal insulation properties, operational capability and processability.

Super Spacer® Premium/ Premium Plus

The flexible spacer, Super Spacer® Premium, made from silicone foam provides maximum thermal insulation of the edge seal for insulating glass assemblies. Thanks to the integrated drying agent and lateral adhesive, the structural foam spacer significantly facilitates the manufacturing of insulating glass assemblies (IG). Available in heights of 4.7 mm (Premium) or 6.5 mm (Premium Plus).

Super Spacer® T SpacerTM Premium/ Premium Plus and
Super Spacer® TriSealTM Premium Plus

These flexible spacers made from silicone foam fulfil the most demanding commercial requirements, including Structural Sealant Glazing (SSG). The triple seal system Super Spacer® T-SpacerTM is fitted on the side with a pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive, which enables highly efficient automated processing and the application of the sealant (polyisobutylene and edge sealing). Available in heights of 6.3 mm (Premium) or 7.3 mm (Premium Plus). The Super Spacer® T-SpacerTM forms the basis for the triple seal system Super Spacer® TriSeal™ Premium Plus, which is fitted with a polyisobutylene sealant for easy manual processing at the factory, in order to reduce gas leakage rates and vapor barrier. A UV stable silicone sealant is required for the structural sealant glazing.

Edgetech is present in large-scale projects

In 2011 Edgetech Europe GmbH opened its production facility in Heinsberg. The flexible, foam-based Super Spacer® systems are manufactured here, in addition to the sites in the UK and the USA. In particular, the formability provides considerable advantages for glazing that exceeds the standard dimensions, as demonstrated by numerous innovative flagship projects.
 
Economic efficiency coupled with a refined appearance
Following five years of production in Heinsberg, Joachim Stoss, who has been CEO at Edgetech since 2013, draws a very positive overall conclusion when looking back on the past five years. “When we came to Germany with our own production facilities, Super Spacers® were in vogue, now we are the trendsetters where warm edge technology is concerned" explains Stoss, and this is something also impressively underlined by the figures. The annual, global output of all three production plants amounts to more than 300 million metres on average, based on turnover Edgetech is the world‘s largest manufacturer of spacers together with its parent company Quanex. Numerous major manufacturers of insulating glass upgraded their manufacturing using automated systems for the application of spacers. Stoss puts this rapid success down to two main factors: achieving the maximum levels of economic efficiency in the production of the insulating glass units as well as the high-precision manual and automatic processing that meets even the most demanding requirements upon the energy efficiency, appearance, moulding and durability.

 

Curved facade glass units for the Düsseldorf Kö-Bogen
Curved insulating glass elements represent the highest art form in architectural facade elements. The sensational concave and convex facades made of natural stone and glass of the Düsseldorf Kö-Bogen constituted a black box project for the glass processors and facade designers - in this case Döring Glas from Berlin and the Lindner Group from Arnstorf. Following a complex development process with numerous test runs, a technical solution was created that satisfied all parties, both in architectural terms and also in terms of the building's structural physics. The technology specialist of the Heinsberg-based company, Christoph Rubel, explains what importance the spacers have in a project of this magnitude – a facade surface of nearly 15,000 m², of which approximately 2,200 m² alone are curved and kinked glass elements that are custom-made and envelop the building: “the glass elements were bonded both internally and externally, whereby the outer bonding acts as a mechanical safeguard. Glued glass connections require a UV-stable, gas-tight silicone sealing. Using our Super Spacer® T-SpacerTM Premium Plus we have repeatedly passed the compliance tests according to EN 1279 with standard insulating glass silicones. Therefore, we also meet the most stringent criteria for the processing in structural insulating glass elements. 2,200 m² of insulated glass units in different radii and panel widths of 2.70 metres and heights of up to 5.60 metres were manufactured for Düsseldorf. This can only be achieved by a glass processor with a flexible spacer that adjusts to any conceivable glass form and can be precisely positioned down to the last millimetre on an automatic line to ensure the parallelism of the glass panes. 

Gill-shaped hatches for the Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) 
Super Spacers® also provided almost identical advantages for the unique façade construction of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg's HafenCity (dockside area). The renowned Swiss architects Herzog & deMeuron had imagined the concert hall with its attached hotel and apartment area in a "slit, moulded and sliced up” state to create a connection between its interior and exterior. Thus gill-shaped hatches can be found in the insulating facade area in front of the hotel. They are created by arched side edges that are respectively directly connected to a flat insulating glass element. Ventilation flaps enclose these soffit surfaces and make it possible for hotel guests to take in the smells and sounds of the harbour. Nearly 2,200 facade units were installed in total in the project. The spherically arched glazed insulating glass facade elements, which are found mainly in the hotel and backstage area, are manufactured using the flexible Super Spacer® TriSealTM Premium Plus. Due to its exposed position, the façade must also be able to withstand the most powerful gale-force winds. Therefore the glass elements were put through extensive strength tests at the Gundelfingen-based façade specialist Gartner. Winds of 150 kilometres per hour, applied a pressure of more than 600 Pascal on to the panes of glass, which also had to withstand heavy rain of two litres per minute and per square meter, and pendulum weight impact tests. Super Spacer® TriSeal™ proved that they are able to withstand even greater stresses in a hurricane simulator at a wind speed of 350 km/h without any difficulty when subjected to positive pressure, and at a wind speed of 395 km/h under suction. Christoph Rubel on the reasons: "In the case of a window with a rigid spacer this forms a sharp edge in the edge seal when subjected above a certain pressure burden on which the glass can break. A flexible spacer also makes the edge seal flexible so that there is no longer a risk of breakage at this point. 

Free forms for the Sheikh Zayed mosque 
A few years after its completion, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, one of the largest mosques in the world, is already an attractive landmark that attracts thousands of visitors every day. Inspired by Moorish, Ottoman, Mamluk and Indo-Islamic culture, the building is not only impressive because of the craftsmanship involved, but also on account of its sheer size: the world's largest marble mosaic in the inner courtyard, the world's largest carpet from Iran, the world's largest Swarovski chandelier, handmade Iznik tiles, precious pietra dura mosaics inside the Mosque, marble and gold leaf everywhere you look.

„This is the kind of order you are only awarded once in your life”, enthused Heiner Berizzi, CEO of Alubat FZCO in Dubai on the work performed at the mosque. Alubat supplied and installed approx. 5,000 square metres of glass in 2,500 different shapes. A magnitude of Super Spacers® was processed here which is by no means everyday for the spacer production specialist. Edgetech experts from Germany travelled to the mosque to support in an advisory capacity with the extensive material tests. For instance, the aluminium construction of the 17-tonne sliding glass doors was not under any circumstances allowed to become at all warped during its installation. Berizzi had this to say about the cooperation with Edgetech: „Without Super Spacer® the elaborate glass elements in the mosque would not have been practically feasible. Free forms can be realised in a very time-consuming manner using rigid spacers. In the face of this huge number of differently shaped windows we needed a spacer which flexibly adapts to every form, and which is additionally suited to the climate in Abu Dhabi.”

Edgetech now offers large format production with sedak

Faster, higher, bigger. sedak has been setting the industry benchmark worldwide since 2015 for the fully automated production of double or triple insulating glass in large formats up to 15 meters in length through its new insulating glass line. No other manufacturer is currently able to automatically produce glass units in this size. An integral part of the system is the application with the Super Spacer® warm edge spacer that is accurate down to the last millimetre. 
 
Shifting the boundaries of what is technically feasible 
 
Several days of manual work versus less than an hour of fully automated production - the productivity boost provided by the new production plant in the Bavarian town of Gersthofen is most impressive. As is the case with many of its architectural projects, the specialists for oversized insulating and safety glass have also gone to the limits of what is physically and technologically possible with the new production plant. A glass element can weigh up to 7 tonnes. The machine handles peak loads of up to 450 kilograms per linear meter. 
 
Flexible spacers for precise positioning 
 
These enormous weights then also pose the greatest difficulty during the transporting of the units along the line, especially following the application of the spacers. Several alternative technologies were discussed before the people at sedak opted for the new Super Spacer® spacers for the insulating glass range. In addition to the increasing importance of the warm edge technology, the high quality and the time and cost saving in application were mainly decisive in reaching this decision. The Super Spacer® also scores highly in terms of the durability of the insulating glass units. Due to the elasticity of the material the probability that the edge seal will be affected by thermal stress drops to almost zero. In addition the tension of the glass units on the edge sealant is minimized. 
 
Super Spacer® enhances product quality and aesthetics 

Transparent aesthetics are the hallmark of the Gersthofen-based glass refiners. This also includes the all-round stepped glass units for transparent facades that can be realized by steps of up to 700 millimetres at the bottom edge.

The discreet appearance of the Super Spacer® represents another advantage for developers and architects. The setting by means of an applicator head that is accurate down to the last millimeter guarantees the parallel application of the spacers and flawless edge composition even at print edges. Thus the new insulating glass line does not just set the standard in terms of its production efficiency, but above all in terms of its reproducible quality and aesthetics.

Additional production line at Edgetech Germany

From the spring of 2016 onwards the Super Spacer® TriSealTM Premium Plus for the European market will be produced in Heinsberg. Edgetech Europe GmbH is expanding its production capacities at its headquarters in western Germany through the addition of a line for the passive house champion from the Super Spacer® product range. The flexible spacer for manual application fulfils three requirements at once for the state-of-the-art glass architecture: it is freely mouldable, energy efficient and durable. 

Edgetech Europe GmbH has two good reasons to celebrate: May 2016 marks the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Heinsberg facilities, at the same time a new production line for Super Spacer® TriSealTM Premium Plus gives the opportunity to supply European customers even faster. Especially for glazings aside from standard sizes the flexible mouldability of this silicone foam spacer provides significant advantages as an innovative and exclusive showcase project that was now completed in Gothenburg after a two years development period and one year of construction work, emphasizes. 

Exclusive showcase project at Kompassen in Sweden 

In the case of the Kompassen shopping centre the architectural firm Ågren Arkitekter had so to speak been issued with a license to transcend boundaries by the investor Vasakronan. The facade in particular should become a hallmark that is visible from afar of the new mall. However, there was one condition attached to the carte blanche: only tried and tested and demonstrably durable materials may be used for the construction work as obviously when constructing a shopping centre the balancing act between aesthetics, functionality and economy is the thing that must be pulled off first and foremost. Architect Magnus Åhs knew what effect he wanted to achieve with his design, but his vision of sunlight reflected and refracted in the facade was only realised through a concerted approach of all the companies involved in this project.

Nominated for the Swedish Glass Prize "Glaspriset 2016"

The Swedish building envelope specialist, Skandinaviska Glassystem, consulted the glass artist Sofia Bergman and the idea of applying amber cast glass in an asymmetrical pyramid shape onto the facade was born. The cast glass parts were manufactured in the glassworks of Målerås Glasbruk that is situated in the middle of the famous "Kingdom of Crystal" in Småland. Each of the total of 5,700 glass pyramids has a base area of 20 by 20 centimetres and weighs more than three kilograms. In a similar way to a conventional insulating glass unit they are applied to the mirror glass that is secured invisibly from the outside to the sandwich facade. The unique glass architecture was nominated for the Swedish Glass Prize "Glaspriset 2016".

Swedish glass tradition meets innovation

The perfect symbiosis between Swedish glass art and state-of-the-art flat glass technology can be seen in the finished facade. However the successful final results could certainly not have been anticipated at the start of the project and hence the responsible project manager at Skandinaviska Glassystem, Erik Stening, found appreciative works for the team: "Only the close cooperation of all the parties involved facilitated the perfect matching of each individual component to form a unique overall work of art which we can all rightly be proud of." Hence Edgetech was, for instance, proposed as a partner by the sealing specialist Sika, due to the fact that Super Spacer® TriSealTM Premium Plus was ideally suited to the manufacture of the small mirror glass units, supplied by KS Glas.

Excellent Values for Edgetech: Super Spacer® spacers to receive Passive House certificate

As the world's first manufacturer of flexible, foam-based edge spacer systems, Edgetech is a pioneer of Warm Edge Technology and thus of energy-efficient construction. In January 2016, three Super Spacer® spacer systems from Edgetech were certified by the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt. 
 
All three of the tested Super Spacer® spacers significantly exceed the required minimum specific edge resistance of 1.50 m K/W and are therefore certified for an Arctic climate, as well as for all climate zones with lower demands. The Warm Edge Super Spacer® Premium, with an edge resistance of 6.11 m K/W, was placed in the highest efficiency class phA+. This product also achieves amongst the best values for its thermal transmittance coefficient Ψ of up to 0.028 [W/mK] (source: Bundesverband Flachglas e.V. - German flat glass association) and thus is today one of the most energy efficient spacers on the market. 

Foam matrix with integrated desiccant absorbs moisture 
 
The moisture permeable foam matrix with integrated desiccant is the major reason for the low thermal conductivity and thus good thermal insulation values of the Super Spacer® product range. Thanks to the non-metallic composite material, the glass retains a uniform temperature over its entire area, radiative cooling of the surfaces is reduced and the dew point is shifted downwards. In addition, the combination of a multi-layered vapour barrier and outer sealing material seals the window against moisture ingress from the outside and gas losses from the inside. Formation of condensation is close to zero.
