Description
Metpump ASX 50 Cu is a cement free alumino-silicate silicon carbide containing pumpable material that is supplied as a two part system including a liquid colloidal silica binder. Burden Cap
Description
Burden Cap is cement bonded, low strength, low melting temperature gunning material that is formulated to provide protective heat isolation and easy removal from substrates to which it is applied.
Application
Burden Cap is recommended for temporarily coating (capping) the hot burden surfaces of blast furnaces after blow down, to provide a heat isolation and carbon monoxide reduction layer to improve the interior working environment.

Metgun 28
Description
Metgun 28 is a high duty general purpose refractory gunning material.
Application
Metgun 28 is recommended as an all purpose maintenance material for alumina refractories such as hot metal cars, hot metal mixers and blast furnace stacks.

Metpump 10 SC
Description
Metpump 10 SC is a proprietary, high alumina, silicon carbide containing pumpable refractory product intended for application by pneumatic shotcreting, which is supplied as a multiple component system, including a colloidal silica binder and a chemical accelerant to induce rapid material setting at application. At application, the wet Metpump 10 SC slurry adheres very readily to all substrates including refractories and metals, which limits “rebound” waste to typically less than 5% and after heat-up, forms very strong bonding to virtually all undeteriorated refractory materials, including carbonaceous refractories. Metpump 10 SC exhibits excellent resistance to thermal shock and chemical attack by molten iron and slag, alkali vapor and carbon monoxide and exceptional high temperature properties, including hot strength and creep resistance. The cement free, sol-gel bonding system of Metpump 10 SC permits application onto even extremely hot substrates via manual or robotic shotcreting application methods and requires minimal dry-out time* for fast turnaround, which minimizes downtime and increases availability.
Application
Metpump 10 SC is recommended for blast furnace bosh, belly and lower stack (shaft) refractories located at and below the cohesive
zone as a new or replacement lining, to reprofi le (replenish) eroded linings to a new hot face geometry utilizing pneumatic shotcreting onto either hot or cold refractory substrates, or as cast iron or copper cooling stave refractory inserts and/or precast and prebaked stave insert linings. Metpump 10 SC is also recommended as a man-made, “artificial” skull coating applied by pneumatic shotcreting to the hot face of carbonaceous hearth linings or on the hot face of unlined copper or cast iron staves in the metallization zones, providing heat loss insulation and protection from molten materials. Because of its excellent resistance to thermal shock that occurs during the rigors of furnace blow in, a Metpump 10 SC “artificial” skull coating is considered “non-sacrificial”, unlike conventional “blow in” protection refractory coatings that actually disappear shortly after furnace start-up.

Metpump BI SC
Description
Metpump BI SC is a cement free alumino-silicate shotcrete material that is supplied as a multiple part system including a liquid colloidal silica binder and a liquid accelerant for rapid material setting. The colloidal silica binder system permits easy placement by shotcreting and requires minimal dryout time.
Application
Metpump BI SC is recommended as a protective blow in lining for applications such as blast furnace stacks.

Origin

In 1981, Magneco/Metrel was formed by a merger of two small companies, Magneco who made fired shapes and Metrel who made monolithic refractories. The concentration was to be on innovation and the creation of value to the customer by lowering the cost of his production.

History

Early product combinations of Magneco/Metrel were refractory stool inserts with Metrel mortars, coatings and patch materials; Magneco dams, weirs and baffles combined with Metrel low cement castables and tundish veneers. Blast Furnace Cast House Refractories which evolved from: Fast drying shovel set and rammable materials using colloidal silica as a binder; to resin bonded ramming Mixes and shapes made from low cement castables licensed from Kawasaki’s Refractories, starting in 1983.

Recent Times / Nanotechnology

Starting in 1989 Magneco/Metrel, recognizing the insurmountable shortcomings of low cement castables, made a total commitment to a new technology utilizing the latest versions of colloidal silica combined with other chemical additives to form a unique binding system. Nanotechnology had come to the Cast House. The first products utilizing the unique colloidal silica binding system were pumpables, which could, of course, be cast but could also be moved through hoses at a considerable distance.The second round of complimentary colloidal silica bonded products was capable of being shotcreted to rebuild surfaces without the use of forms.

Today Nanotechnology Continues

The great success of the Nanotechnology approach in Iron making Cast Houses led to other Iron making applications for a family of products built on the common base of the colloidal silica binder system. At the present time these products are used throughout cast houses and also:

In shotcrete reprofiling of the stacks and boshes of Blast Furnaces
Hearth leveling and cooling course
sStave backfill
Arrester courses
Artificial Skulls; and
Protection of new staves on their hot faces

The unique characteristics of the Refractories made with the colloidal silica binder system developed by Magneco/Metrel, caused Magneco/Metrel to experiment with a number of other formulas to create value for customers by providing quick repairs and therefore equipment availability. To date, there has been great success with monolithic materials in Reheat Furnaces, Glass making Furnaces, Frit making Furnaces, Sodium Silicate Furnaces and in the Aluminum, Copper and Ferro Alloys Industries. Products using the binder system are also finding success in Power Plants and throughout Industries in general, wherever heat and corrosive elements must be contained by material which can be endlessly repaired, providing fast turnarounds coupled with outstanding physical properties such as hot modulus of rupture, thermal shock and thermal cycling resistance and resistance to corrosive attacks.
