New laser-assisted cutting process for high edge quality of laminated sheet glass shapes

Automated cutting of laminated glass sheets is limited primarily to straight sectioning. First, the glass sheet gets scored on both sides, and the separating crack is induced, second the laminating foil is heat softened along the sectioning path, and then stretched and cut through. This severing method results in a messy, irregular appearance along the edges of the glass shapes.  

Fraunhofer IWM together with the machinery company HEGLA have developed a new laser-assisted cutting process that enables the cutting of laminated sheet glass along arbitrarily curved paths (not only straight) and which yields high edge quality. In this new process, first the laminating foil is dissolved along the sectioning path by means of laser radiation. And in the second step the glass is scored, and the separating crack is induced. This cutting process leads to smooth and clean edges of all shapes.

Sheet glass panes of high surface quality with locally molded 3D-areas

Localized convex or concave shaped areas within large panes of sheet glass can now be manufactured by means of a new laser-assisted sag-and-bending process. The complete glass sheet outside the molded areas experiences no curvature changes, and the glass surface is not impaired by any roughness or waviness, as no molding dies are employed in this forming process. A wide variety of shapes may be formed within plane or curved glass sheets of clear or tinted color. Short cycle time and very short machine set-up time enable low cost manufacturing of individual, custom-made products for architectural, automotive, or indoor glazing.
