Non-stick coatings for clean surfaces

Dust and particles on manufacturing equipment could become a thing of the past with very thin coatings from the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC. The environmentally friendly coating, based on non-metallic inorganic materials, offers adjustable properties with its toolbox principle. The special structuring on the surface reduces the adhesion of particles or processing dust similar to the known lotus effect. The coating is temperature-resistant, food-safe and durable.

The coating can be applied to glass, ceramics or metals by dipping or spraying with subsequent thermal curing. Even certain plastics can be coated with special lacquer compositions. High cleaning costs are thus effectively reduced and existing facility parts or glasses can be economically upgraded with the anti-stick property.

Inside and on top – material solutions by Fraunhofer ISC

As an industry oriented material research institute, Fraunhofer ISC develops customized special glass and coating solutions for glass finishing. In addition to materials development, ISC provides comprehensive analysis for the characterization of glass to optimize production and upscaling processes. Also, we design individual measuring systems for quality control of thermal processes.

ISC provides consulting services for the glass sector. Our priorities include glass solders for joining metals and ceramics for use at high temperatures, glass fibers, porous glass flakes, colored glass, glass ceramics, glass powders and printing pastes. On customer request we manufacture specific glass compositions for small and bigger scale.

Apart from inorganic materials we use ORMOCER®, a hybrid polymer of ISC, for the finishing of glasses. Hybrid materials allow adjustment of the surface characteristics, e. g. anti-reflection and anti-stick coatings or electrochromic layers, colored, hydrophobic and abrasion resistant layers. By clever combination of material characteristics Fraunhofer ISC develops multifunctional properties for one single coating system.

With the Center for Applied Analytics located at ISC, we offer chemical and structural analysis as well as analytical methods for evaluating the physical properties of glasses. This includes the preservation methods of historical glasses, failure analysis, surface analysis and characterization of layer properties.

At glasstec we present red glasses, nanoporous glass flakes, electrochromic glasses, flat glasses with anti-dust coating and the model of a self-developed thermal optical measuring system.
