Fraunhofer IWM Halle becomes Fraunhofer IMWS in 2016
Starting January 1, 2016, the Halle (Saale) branch of the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM will operate as a separate institute. The Freiburg branch will continue as the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM.

Fraunhofer IWM develops sustainable and resource efficient solutions with respect to optimized use of material properties, achieving of specific mechanical function of components, and innovative manufacturing processes. Fraunhofer IWM acts as driver of innovations, stimulus, and problem solver for industrial and public clients in the field of mechanical safety, reliability, service life and functionality of components and systems. By use of experimental testing equipment and procedures paired with computer aided simulation Fraunhofer IWM investigates mechanical failure and service behavior of manufactured components. Fraunhofer IWM develops optimized material compositions, processing steps, and design of components on the basis of physical properties and microstructure of materials. We support our customers to adjust material properties and service behavior of components in order to withstand the maximum loads in service and to fulfill the desired functionality efficiently.
