A new roof-integrated solar PV solution has helped a specialist renewable energy installation company meet both the aesthetic and power performance needs of a large residential property project in the North East.
Advanced Renewable Power Ltd. (ARP) secured the contract for the installation of a new 2.8kW solar PV system as part of the refurbishment of a private property in Billingham, Teesside – however the owner wanted to avoid the use of conventional, on-roof PV panels.
To accommodate this requirement ARP recommended the use of the new Intecto roof integrated PV tile system from Romag.
This ground breaking new concept combines renewable energy generation with a terracotta colour matched tile design to enable the PV cell to blend seamlessly and sympathetically into a conventional roofscape.
For the Billingham property scheme, ARP carried out the full re-roofing of the house, with the interlocking Intecto PV tiles being used to replace conventional concrete tiles over a large section of the south facing roof area.
The lightweight terracotta coloured Intecto tiles are fitted in the same way as traditional roof tiles, with direct fixing to wooden battens, and sit flush with standard roof tiles to provide a conventional finish.
Mark Dunville, technical director of ARP, said: “This was the first time we have installed Intecto tiles, the project was very straightforward, with the re-roofing and tiling being carried out in exactly the same way as normal.
“The availability of the Intecto tiles allowed us to meet the roof top appearance required by the householder without compromising the solar PV power generation capability of the system.
“There is growing demand for this type of system, with the unique combination of colour, architectural values and aesthetic PV generation properties of integrated tiles giving us the ability to offer a range of roof top options to meet the specific needs of individual properties and client preferences.”
Available in black, grey and terracotta colours, the Intecto range is fully IEC and MCS certified and complies with other international and European building industry regulations and roofing performance standards.
The concept is also particularly suitable for heritage and green-belt areas, where the requirement is for rooftop solar PV systems that maintains the integrity and aesthetical requirements of individual buildings and their local environment.
