India container glass plant expands use of DuPont™ Vespel® inserts

DuPont™ Vespel ®SCP-5050 parts and shapes can be custom designed.

Take-out inserts play a pivotal role in the container glass manufacturing process because they must contact newly formed hot glass containers while they’re still vulnerable without causing damage. A leading container-glass manufacturer that operates plants throughout India has been using DuPont™ Vespel® SCP–5050 inserts to increase productivity and recently expand their use to more bottle types.

The container-glass manufacturer historically had used metallic tongs and graphite inserts in tandem for the production of beer and soft drink bottles. Initially, Pyrotek worked with the company to substitute those with fully machined Vespel® inserts at one of its plants.

Vespel® SCP-5050 parts and shapes can be custom designed, and their unique properties increase glass plant melt-to-pack ratios by delivering step-changing performance for hot glass ware handling while minimising physical and thermal checking. The SCP–5050 take-out inserts are made from DuPont polyimide resins that have low thermal conductivity and oil absorption, as well as high impact and wear resistance. These unique properties extend life and reduce scrap from checking.

The India container-glass manufacturer found that Vespel® inserts lasted more than twice as long as the graphite inserts, and machine downtime was decreased. They were particularly successful in narrow neck press and blow (NNPB) machines with synchronised motion control.

After this initial success, Pyrotek’s technical team introduced Vespel® for similar-sized bottles, such as ketchup and jam. The inserts consistently outperform other materials in terms of reduced checking, higher machine uptime and providing better value.

Pyrotek’s global network of technical professionals works with manufacturers to determine which Vespel® insert shape and size will best suit their applications.
