When glass reduces noise: what noise reducing glazing can do

Read on to discover what modern glazing can already achieve today and learn about the solutions provided by the industry.

Noise has long been a factor in planning for many buildings. Demand for noise reduction is rising, especially in densely populated cities, along busy roads or near railways lines and airports. Glazing plays a pivotal role here because windows and glazed façades are the construction components through which outside noise can enter buildings.

The difference that sound reduction glass makes in practice

The most important aspect here is glass structure. As a matter of principle, more mass, i.e. thicker or heavier glass, helps to reduce noise. In practice, however, this alone is often not enough. This is why many solution providers work with laminated sheet glass, meaning two or more glass sheets connected with each other through special interlayers. Typical structures would have an acoustically effective PVB film sandwiched between an approximately 6mm and an 8mm glass sheet. Optimised acoustic films play a prominent role here. They change the vibration behaviour of the laminated glass thereby improving sound insulation, especially in critical areas.

Not every noise is the same though. Low-frequency traffic noise comes with different requirements to higher-frequency noise. This is also reflected by the parameters: depending on their design, standard glass compounds often achieve Rw-indices between 30 and 34 dB, while acoustically optimised laminated glass reaches markedly higher values. Which sound insulation values are required in specific cases, depends on external noise levels, the use of the building and the respective part of the building in accordance with DIN 4109; higher values can be required at highly exposed sites. This is why sound insulating glazing is selectively geared to its respective location.

Sound insulation: the key parameters:

  • Rw (Weighted Sound Reduction Index): he standard in Europe (EN ISO 717-1). This states sound insulation in decibel (dB).
  • Spectrum adaptation values: often referred to as Rw (C; Ctr) with C representing high-frequency noise (e.g. dwelling activities) and Ctr representing low-frequency traffic noise.
  • STC (Sound Transmission Class): standard applied in the USA and Canada (ASTM E413). This focuses more on human speech frequencies.
  • OITC (Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class): also customary in the USA (ASTM E1332) to rate the insulation, especially against external noise (traffic, aircraft).

Weak spots in the system: frame and installation

High-quality sound insulation glass only unlocks its benefits if it is installed properly. Frames, sealing and joints are often the weakest “links in the acoustic chain”. Planners and processors should consistently design the complete window and/or façade structure to match the target sound insulation class – the glass alone does not make for a sound-insulating construction component.

Solutions offered by the glass industry

In practice, the glass industry is particularly focused on acoustically optimised laminated glass. Modern products roll sound insulation, security and thermal insulation into one solution. Special, mostly PVB-based interlayer films are used here to acoustically optimise the laminated glass sheets. Depending on the structure they can also be combined with other functional interlayers.

When planning it is key to consider the use, location and sources of noise from the outset – and understand glazing as part of an acoustically coordinated overall system.
