Exploiting the full potential of glass – this is the motto of the frameless load-bearing glass structure that TU Darmstadt and its project partners knippershelbig, Yachtglass and Eastman are presenting at glasstec 2024. While glass panes in conventional grid shells are usually used exclusively for infill, they take on a load-bearing function in the Frameless exhibit.
With the frameless load-bearing glass construction, the linear fittings laminated into the glass elements replace the primary steel structure. This reduction of the steel content to the necessary minimum is made possible by the use of parametric design tools. Glass constructions can thus be realised in a more resource and energy-efficient manner, while retaining diversity of form and transparency. The project team's vision is to make fully-fledged building envelopes possible by integrating metal fittings into insulated glazing units (IGUs). Potential applications include patio roofs and sun decks in shipbuilding.
