The lasers from MDI Advanced Processing GmbH can be used to cut, drill, structure or mark glass. In the construction sector, the systems are used for drilling vacuum insulation glass, among other things. The holes with the special moulds are required to create the vacuum and then to be able to close them again permanently. Such hole shapes are generally not feasible using conventional methods.
The exhibits at glass technology live 2024 show that many other applications in the glass sector are conceivable and possible. One example of this is a glass aeroplane that demonstrates the precision and versatility of laser technology. Other samples show how complex shapes, notches and details can be created.
The contours are transferred from the CAD program to the laser and then implemented by the laser without tool changes or downtime. Even the smallest radii and diameters down to 0.1 µm can be created using this technology. According to MDI Advanced Processing GmbH, other advantages include the variety of moulds, the clean and dry process, high productivity, low energy consumption and low operating costs.
