The International Architecture Congress, was held as part of the glasstec 2018 trade fair, aimed to demonstrate the variety of applications of glass in architecture and to highlight the design as well as the functional potential created by the innovative use of glass as a material.
Internationally renowned architects presented their positions on the basis of design principles of exemplary buildings and provided an overview of current architecture with glass of high aesthetic and functional quality.
The transparency of glass structures is fascinating and daunting at the same time. The emotional distrust towards a transparent material opposes the rational knowledge that the material would be sufficiently strong to form a structure. Recently, glass has increasingly been used as a structural component. However, its inherent brittleness still requires opaque metal connections to transfer loads. These connections define contemporary glass architecture – firstly, because they are immediately apparent in a transparent structure and, secondly, as they are part of the engineering design language. This presentation discusses a novel approach to transparent connections on an experimental and case study basis.
