Slot Die Coating (Extrusion Coating) Technology

Slot die coating technology is used to deposit a variety of liquid chemistries onto glass, stainless steel, and plastic substrates for the development and production of a broad range of applications. This is achieved through the precise metering the process fluid and dispensing it at a controlled rate while the coating die is precisely moved relative to the substrate

nTact’s Slot Die Coating systems and technology allows for efficient, high performance spinless coating for applications such as flat panel displays (including LCD, OLED, flexible, and others), photovoltaic panels (such as CIGS, CdTe, OPV, and others), Solid State Lighting (OLED and LED), and various Organic and Printed Electronic applications such as RFID, Polymer Batteries, Sensors and others.

Advantages and features of nTact’s Slot Die Coating Technology include:
Able to Coat Organic or Inorganic Liquids on flexible or rigid substrates
Excellent coating uniformity (typically ±3% or better)
Capable of coating a wide range of process materials: high and low viscosity fluids
Deposit a wide range of thicknesses: from 20nm to >150μm
High efficiency / high material utilization: typically 95% process material utilization
Technology proven scalable from small R&D to large panel, high volume/mass production
Systems available from R&D to large systems for production of panels over 2,000mm wide
Highly reliable and robust process: up to 95% yields in high volume production environments
High throughput (low TACT) processing
Size of the system footprint is relatively small compared to competing technology platforms
Technology applicable to roll-to-roll processing

nTact’s cutting-edge slot die coating technology and equipment is being applied to the development of photovoltaic (PV) devices, thereby sustaining an industry which is expected to grow to $116.5 billion by 2019. The PV industry is under constant pressure to reduce production costs effectively, in order to decrease the price per kilowatt hour to be in parity with or lower than traditional fossil fueled energy sources. nTact’s slot die systems offer highly efficient use of materials and low equipment cost of ownership, presenting a very attractive manufacturing alternative for the PV industry when compared to typical vapor deposition or sputtering techniques and other technologies with poor material utilization.
nTact systems are already being evaluated for lower cost production of Perovskite PV, Organic PV, Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC), CIGS, CdTe and selected Si wafer based photovoltaic technologies for depositing a variety of active layers as well as antireflective films to improve PV efficiencies.
nTact was recently the recipient of a National Science Foundation award to development and manufacture stable, cost effective perovskite photovoltaic devices by adapting and using their proprietary slot die coating technology and systems.

About us

Company details

About nTact
Established in 1988, nTact is the dba for FAS Holdings Group, LLC, and is engaged in the design, development, manufacture, integration, sale and service of advanced, high-precision slot die deposition (coating) systems and integrated process solutions for the display, microelectronics, alternative energy, and other thin-film dependent industries. The company enjoys worldwide recognition as a pioneer in the development of fluid handling and slot die coating equipment for a wide range of high technology applications, and is the inventor of the extrusion or “spinless” coating, a slot die based technology that has become the standard deposition method for the flat panel display (FPD) industry.
nTact was founded in Dallas, Texas, and was initially focused on the development of an innovative and proprietary dual-stage pump for dispensing high purity polymers. The Company successfully introduced a line of patented fluid handling products, delivering these products worldwide to major semiconductor manufacturers. In the early 1990s, using its proven dispense technology as a foundation, nTact began the development of its Slot Die coating (extrusion coating) technology, identifying it at the time as “FAS-Coat,” for thin film microelectronics applications. The development work of this slot die based coating technology occurred in the early stages of the FPD industry and eventually became the de facto standard for large area processing and LCD manufacturing.
nTact’s proprietary coating technology has made it possible for a single technology platform to provide the essential coating / deposition operations in key markets such as Flat Panel Display (including LCD, OLED, PLED, Flexible, and Touch Screen), Solid State Lighting (OLED / PLED), Photovoltaic (Organic PV, CIGS, CdTe and other thin film applications), RFID, ICC, Semiconductor, and others including biomedical and fuel cells.
