A+W iShape: Digitalize templates with a smartphone camera

For the production of a non-rectangular sheet (shape, free form), glass processors frequently receive a hand drawing or a wood, chipboard or cardboard template from the customer. Modern production on CNC machines requires digital data in order to define these shapes.
The glass processor needs a simple and flexible solution for generating digital data from the template. Older systems for digitalization require special equipment and calibration – but this is expensive and time-consuming.
A+W, in conjunction with Viprotron, has developed a user-friendly, amazingly easy-to-operate app for exactly this purpose – A+W iShape. The template is fitted with the L-shaped reference objects and then photographed with a high-end smartphone camera. The reference objects, high-quality precision metal pieces, are placed on the template or fastened to it. They serve to correct any distortions when photographing. The objects also have a QR code, which enables automatic detection of the objects and eliminates the need for any further configuration.
The special feature: in contrast to older solutions, no calibration of the camera is required! A+W iShape works with any good smartphone camera.

New COO for the A+W Clarity division

Effective October 1, 2020, Dennis Tiegs has assumed the position of Chief Operations Officer (COO) for A+W's A+W Clarity business unit. 

A+W Clarity is the "software for glass" division at A+W. At the same time, Dennis Tiegs will become a member of the A+W executive management team and report directly to A+W CEO Peter Dixen.

Dennis Tiegs most recently occupied the position of COO Global Accounts in the A+W Clarity business unit at the leading company for flat glass software. Here, he was responsible for commercial and technical support of international corporate groups. This 35-year-old manager therefore brings to the table a veritable wealth of customer support experience.

Dennis Tiegs joined the company in 2007 and has profound knowledge of the A+W software systems – the best prerequisites for his new leadership position. In the future, in addition to providing support for regular customers and constantly enhancing the A+W Clarity software, he especially wants to dedicate himself to new and scalable automation concepts. Dennis Tiegs lives nearby with his partner and four children.

The new COO believes that the A+W Clarity business unit is on the right trail. "I look forward to working with our customers and employees to orient the A+W glass software strategically toward future requirements and advancing the digitalization of the industry consistently. Highly digitalized systems in networked systems enable the permanent exchange of real-time information of machines with software systems. A new, clever A+W interface between glass storage and A+W ERP system makes use of these possibilities. Thanks to the new A+W Gantry Interface, time-consuming synchronization, deviating inventories, and complicated manual corrections of glass inventories in the base glass storage are a thing of the past.

Have you experienced situations such as these? An employee in purchasing needs to know what the current inventory of a particular glass type is for a very important order. He can't reach the responsible people in production on the phone. So he sends a trainee to cutting. However, his contact is engaged on the break-out table, but is available 15 minutes later. The trainee receives the information and goes – after he has taken a quick smoke break – back to the office. Meanwhile, the colleague who sent him to cutting has gone to lunch. Two hours later, he finally has the information and he can finish his order.

GLASWELT Interview with Alfred Cortisse: Virtual cooperation is frequently more effective

The Corona crisis has made it perfectly clear just how critical software that works well is for producing companies. We interviewed Alfred Cortisse of A+W Software, a company that supports window builders and glass operations. This software specialist explains how processing operations can control their production from a home office and how A+W maintains its support safely.

GLASWELT – Mr. Cortisse, the current situation has shown that precisely in times of crisis, functional software is the basis for keeping things running. How have you been assisting customers during the crisis and how do you keep support going?

As Chief Operations Officer at A+W, Alfred Cortisse is responsible for all activities in the glass sector in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
Alfred Cortisse – Yes, the crisis, which arose quite spontaneously, has shown us how essential a well-oiled system of personnel, software, and machines is for the success of an operation. This is true even if no one actually has to run to the trouble spots in question in every case; it is possible to keep production running from a home office.

The crisis has demonstrated why it is more important than ever to work with reliable solutions and partners. As the world's leading software producer for the flat glass and window production industry, we have long offered our customers professional, multilingual service. This service is available thanks to our international structure, with subsidiaries in the USA and Australia in other time zones; we can therefore also offer service outside of normal office hours.

GLASWELT – What does a processor have to do to ensure that the operation can keep running during the crisis? Which departments can work easily from a home office, for example?

Alfred Cortisse – It's important for operations to keep their software up to date. This allows them to react quickly to changes. And it allows us to help them with new functions in timely fashion. With today's cloud solutions and current terminal servers, administrative tasks can be handled very well and efficiently from the home office. Thus, all commercial processes and work preparation can be done remotely.

GLASWELT –Can you explain a few technical details about how this works?

Alfred Cortisse – Technically it's no problem to work from home today: with a VPN connection, you can access the company server from your home office and work just like you can on-site. Of course this assumes that you have a good Internet connection at home, something that is generally not a problem these days. However, even if you are still using production terminals and generating the labels at each workstation, for example, working remotely still makes life easier. For precisely the machine data currently required is generated and nobody has to distribute data media and/or labels to the workstations in question. You can also view reports from the home office. Assuming you have appropriate operational agreements, production can also be monitored well remotely.

GLASWELT – How is data security guaranteed with the online connection?

Alfred Cortisse – Thanks to encryption, a VPN offers a high standard of security. Checks for authorization are done in the home office exactly as on a workstation on company premises. Special agreements apply for remote maintenance. And special, secured access to the systems also has to be set up for our employees.

For larger customer groups, multi-factor security systems are also used for remote maintenance; they provide personal and temporally restricted, documented access. In some cases, access to productive systems is only granted after personal consultation.

GLASWELT – Do you think that the Corona crisis will change work structures in our industry, and if so, how?

Alfred Cortisse – Many industrial operations are already a ways down the road toward digitalizing. The current crisis will accelerate this. With automation, bidirectional data exchange with machines will be an unavoidable step in the future. Downstream processes will adjust dynamically in real time. By contrast, process documentation is still frequently done manually. Producers' liability is becoming a big topic. Without digitalization, the proof required for this is very difficult or impossible to provide, and it's frequently incomplete.

From my point of view, we have seen recently that you can work very well together online. I think we are much more efficient with some of our customers. Earlier, we collected topics in order to plan out days so that travel time was worthwhile. Today, experts meet virtually and work together on projects. Travel time has become constructive work time. We are experiencing digitalization in the way we interact with one another, with regard to topics, and especially using software for online teamwork; the result is an entirely new form of cooperation. I'm convinced that the way we cooperate will change permanently.

Industry 4.0: Digitalizing Shipping and Delivery


The customer measures a supplier's quality by the quality of the company's delivery logistics. Delivery is one of the most important customer touchpoints. Timeliness, completeness, and the condition of the delivery are critical for the customer, especially if the product - as is generally the rule in the flat glass industry - will be processed further and the delivery has therefore been incorporated into the customer's production planning from an early stage. Delivery on short notice and timely construction site delivery are services that are simply expected today.

That's why delivery logistics and the handling of complaints are so important for the customer. How quickly can the flat glass partner delivery the replacement lite? Can the customer adhere to his production sequence or will there be critical delivery bottlenecks with the end product? Delivery logistics begin with the supplier's production planning, whereby the delivery dates match the production sequence. In the end, the customer decides what will be produced and delivered first.

The production of complex lites and insulated glass units has to be done so that the lites are available on-time for loading on the truck on the right rack in the right sequence for the right route. This means that the racks with the lites have to be prepared and optimized for loading using a perfect shipping logistics system. Delivery and packing logistics have to work smoothly together in highly integrated fashion. Manually, this is very difficult to achieve; it is labor-intensive and expensive.

Packing logistics begins with the individual rack. In well-organized insulated glass operations, products are placed on shipping racks directly and so they are optimized. Highly specialized software systems such as the A+W Rack Optimizer ensure that the packing restrictions for the shipping rack are considered, as is the order in which the customer will remove items from it.

In the Industry 4.0 world, the racks will be loaded by robots controlled by software – precisely to the millimeter, quickly, and without manual intervention. Nothing will have to be picked or repacked; optimally loaded shipping racks are ready for packing on "their" truck.

The cargo space of the delivery vehicles is also optimized for maximum capacity with well-organized digital shipping logistics.

Electronic packing information
Based on barcode registrations, precise packing lists will be created, which can be sent to customers electronically. This way, the packing information is present in the customer's IT system right away and it does not have to be placed on the shipping rack in paper form – which increases the security and availability of the information.
As with the package service: the customer confirms receipt of his delivery with an electronic signature.
Now the customer knows exactly which lite will be delivered when on which truck and rack, and if necessary, also which broken lite must be re-delivered. Naturally the lite sequence on the shipping racks is also documented on the packing list. This is another little piece of digitalization that increases the efficiency and security of the delivery process enormously.

Load optimization
In addition to other parameters, good logistics optimizers also optimize the loading of the trucks considering various kinds of racks. For example, various A racks can be optimized together with boxes for maximum utilization of the cargo space. Here, depending on the truck type, the delivery sequence also has to be considered – it's useless if the storage space is used optimally but racks cannot be accessed easily in the delivery sequence. State-of-the-art logistics systems consider this since they examine both packing and delivery logistics.

Route planning
Before loading of the trucks is optimized, if it is configured properly, the supplier's logistics software has long since taken care of all the route planning. State-of-the-art, highly automated systems plan the shortest route automatically, considering all destinations, in order to reduce time and costs. This solution integrates entire truck fleets and route parameters and analyzes the driving times in order to guarantee that deliveries or pick-ups can be made as cost-effectively as possible within the planned time.

A+W Rack Optimizer generates sequences with which high-priority items can be delivered. Routes are adjusted to traffic in order to achieve the best results. During the route calculation, parameters such as storage space (storage meters), delivery times, hold times, and priorities selected by the user are considered.

Smart Delivery: delivery in the age of Industry 4.0
Of course comprehensively digitalized systems such as the A+W Logistics Optimizer also help with delivery to the customer. This is how the driver can use a delivery app on a smartphone to book the delivery and report it back to the ERP system in real time. There, the dispatch manager can monitor the delivery of the route online and react directly to reports such as "Lite 0815 broken" and initiate re-production.

This way, the supplier frequently saves several days and in many cases can deliver the re-produced lite the very next working day. The driver also has the opportunity to photograph the delivery situation with a smartphone (where? in what condition?); the picture remains in the system and serves as additional proof of proper delivery, if necessary deviating delivery point and irregularities such as damage, etc.

Using GPS coordinates, planned and also deviating delivery points are reported and are therefore available at any time for after-the-fact evaluations.

When the customer confirms correct delivery, invoicing can be initiated immediately – and so more time and money is saved. The system also supports the delivery and pick-up of additional racks and it can thus be integrated completely into route optimization.
